It all started with a newspaper article announcing that Rachel Reeves, the new Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK was intending to change the artwork on display in No 11 Downing Street. As the first female Chancellor, she was understandably somewhat underwhelmed by the male, pale and stale works on show. But her declared intention to rehang No 11 with work 'of or by women' just hugely jarred. Hence the story I posted on Instagram below ...
The lovely Cas Bradbeer replied and suggested it would be a 'really interesting project to rehang no 11' .. which got my brain whirring. I'm not sure anyone is about to let me loose on No 11, and I'm far from a professional curator, unlike Cas, but I realised that perhaps a virtual rehang could be a thing. Hence developing the @RehangNo11 account and this website.
My intention is for this to be a decentered curatorial project, with the following curatorial principles:
To imagine a more progressive rehang of No 11 Downing Street
To post one image and text each week from a contributor
To engage a broad range of contributors from within and beyond the art world
To let contributors speak in their own voice, with minimal, if any editing.
(ie. I am actively seeking varied thought, language and tone of voice. I am not expecting it to read as one homogenous 'exhibition')
I welcome contributions from people of all genders and identification. Likewise works proposed are not restricted by gender. The only expectation is that the work is in some way progressive - challenging notions of patriarchal society. This can be in its broadest sense and is not limited to directly addressing the male gaze. I am also interested in work that addresses No 11 Downing Street as the residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, considering ideas of labour, economy and allocation of resources.
